2023.1.30. 오늘의 영어(미드 the Chosen)

 

오늘은 어제 미드를 보면서 메모 해 왔던 단어들을 적고 외워보도록 하겠다. 

나는 어제부터 미드 The chosen을 보기 시작했다.

 

아래는 해당 미드에서 나온 단어들. 

단어만 기억나는 경우 예문은 다른 곳에서 가져왔다. 

 

1. luminous: producing or reflecting bright light, especially in the dark: 어둠속에서 빛나는 

You were luminous.
(Nicodemus의 제자 Shmuel이 그의 스승에게 한 말로 기억함.
기독교에서는 빛이 신성한 구별된 존재를 의미하는 경우가 있는데,
따라서 뭔가 신성하고 아름다운 빛나는 존재라는 칭찬으로 한 것이 아닐까)

God appeared in a tiny luminous figure in the darkness.

 

2. cause a disturbance. (관사에 주의) : to break the law by fighting or behaving extremely noisily in public

소란을 일으키는 경우를 의미. 영화에서는 뭔가 거리/시장에 소동이 일어났을 때 이야기 됨.

It may be causing a disturbance.

 

3. be on edge: to be nervous or worried:

Everybody is on their edge. 
드라마에서는 뭔가 오늘따라 분위기가 이상할 때 그에 대한 설명으로 이야기 됨.

When you arn't on edge or under pressure.

 

4. Purview: the limit of someone's responsibility, interest, or activity: 내 책임/업무내용 밖

This falls outside of my purview.
(Nicodemus에게 로마 교황청이 뭔가를 요구하는데, 이는 나의 임무 밖이라고 항의하는 부분에서 나온 단어)

This case falls outside of his purview.
This issue is within my purview.

 

5. Allegiance: loyalty and support for a ruler, country, group, or belief: 충성심

Becoming a government employee requires to sign an "oath of allegiance."
In many American schools, students still pledge allegiance to the flag at the beginning of the school day.

 

6. Unravel: 1) 실타래를 풀다 If a piece of knitted or woven cloth, a knot, or a mass of thread unravels, it separates into a single thread, and if you unravel it, you separate it into a single thread: 2) (어려운 문제나 미스테리 등을) 이해하려 알다 If you unravel a mysterious, unknown, or complicated subject, you make it known or understood, and if it unravels, it becomes known or understood: 3) (합의, 협상, 동의 등) 파기/파괴되다 If a process or achievement that was slow and complicated unravels or is unravelled, it is destroyed:

I began to unravel the root of my own work story.
I attempted to unravel the mistery of this town.
I tried to unravel the situation. But, all of my attempts have failed.
The agreement could easily unravel for a variety of reasons having to do with the interests of different parties.

 

7. Guile/ɡaɪl/]: 속이다 clever but sometimes dishonest behaviour that you use to deceive someone: 
the practice of deceiving people or using other dishonest methods to achieve your aims, or the ability to deceive people for this purpose:

I love that she has no guile.
It seems that the comination of guile and charm brought much success that he needed to stay in power.

 

8. Carpenter: 목수 a person whose job is making and repairing wooden objects and structures

예수님의 아버지 직업 이야기 하다가 나온 말.

 

9. Jesus of Nazareth

나사렛 예수를 영어로 하면 이렇게 된다. 나사렛은 지역이름이고, 예수님의 고향이다. 

 

 “Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?” Nathanael asked.

이 장면이 많이 기억에 남았다. 
비아냥거리는 말투. (spoken as a sarcastic remark.)

 

모르는 단어가 너무 많은데, 나머지는 내일 이어서 포스팅 해 봐야겠다.

기독교인이라면 늘 배움에 겸손한 자세를 가지며, 

이미 안다고 믿는 지식에 회의하며 하나님과의 대화를 통하여 진리를 찾아가야 하지 않을까. 

내가 인간의 이론, 상식을 넘어서 하나님의 지혜를 받아 살아가는 사람이 되길 소망한다.
